UPS and Battery Backup FAQs
What is the difference between a UPS and Battery Backup?
Battery Backup describes stored battery power used when the main power supply is unavailable. A UPS uses stored energy to support connected equipment during a power interruption and, depending on its design, can also provide power conditioning. Battery backup is a function; UPS identifies the system.
Is a Universal Power Supply the same as a UPS?
UPS stands for Uninterruptible Power Supply. “Universal Power Supply” is not the standard expansion of UPS and may refer to a different type of power supply. If you need backup power during an outage, ask about a UPS system and its battery backup capabilities.
What does “Uninterruptable Power Source” mean?
If you are using “Uninterruptable Power Source” to describe backup power equipment, the standard term is Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). A UPS supplies backup power when utility power fails; the available runtime depends on the system, batteries and connected load.
Is “Universal Power Source” another name for UPS?
“Universal Power Source” is not the standard technical name for a UPS. For equipment that supplies backup power during an outage, use Uninterruptible Power Supply or UPS battery backup. MCS can help you discuss the appropriate system for your facility.
